Freshwater Pearl Education
Freshwater Pearl Colors
Freshwater cultured pearls are created in white as well as a wide variety of pastel colors. They can naturally be harvested in peach, lavender, and pink pearl colors. They make beautiful creative necklaces with abstract designs and elegant patterns.
Shape & Size
Freshwater pearls can be created from 3mm to 11mm in size. They are very difficult to find completely round or near-round. Only an average of about 2% of the all harvests become round. This is a result of the culturing, since there nucleus is made of mantle tissue it causes the pearl to generally come out oval.
Sixty percent of Freshwater pearls are symmetrical mainly in the oval and button shape while the remaining 38% are baroque and semi-baroque.
Freshwater vs. Akoya
In today's jewelry market, Freshwater cultured pearls are gaining a larger share. Freshwater pearl farming has made many advances since its early days. Many people, who once looked as freshwater pearls as an inferior substitute to Akoya, are now realizing that the best round white freshwater pearls are often indistinguishable from the finest white Akoya.
The Freshwater pearl looks remarkably similar to the Akoya pearl, but Freshwater pearls are available for almost 1/5 the price of Akoya pearls. One reason for why Freshwater cultured pearls have such reasonable prices is the fact that a Freshwater mussel (oyster) can produce up to 40 cultured pearls. Akoya oysters can only accept up to 5.
If you're looking for pearls at an outstanding value, Freshwater pearls are the perfect gift.
